In Ontario, O.Reg. 213/91 s.228 requires protective systems (shoring, sloping, or trench box) for excavations deeper than 1.2 metres (4 feet) where a worker is required to enter. Some soil conditions require protection at shallower depths.
A competent person trained in soil classification methods. In Ontario, this is typically the excavation supervisor who has been trained in visual-manual soil classification. For complex sites, a geotechnical engineer may be required.
