IEEE 80 ground grid design, step and touch potential analysis, soil resistivity interpretation, and grounding verification for substations and solar farms.
Solar farms with medium voltage collection systems and utility interconnection transformers can produce significant ground fault currents. Without proper grid design, fault current creates dangerous step and touch potentials on the ground surface. Utilities require IEEE 80 analysis before energization.
There is no single acceptable value. The design accommodates whatever the soil provides. Low resistivity (<100 Ω·m, clay/wet soil) makes grounding easier. High resistivity (>1000 Ω·m, rock/sand/frozen soil) requires larger grids, more rods, or soil treatment. The design must work for worst-case seasonal conditions.
